Bears and People
This is a great brochure from Parks Canada that will give you a lot of useful information on how to keep yourself safe in bear country. It also has information on bear behaviour and what to do if you get into a difficult situation with a bear. Don't let the fear of a bear encounter ruin your experience when visiting this area but it is really important that you are armed with the knowledge you need to assume responsibility for your own safety. Knowledge is power but bears can always be unpredictable -- we can only generalise about their behaviour. Always be "alert" and make lots of noise frequently as you move on trails -- talking, singing, calling out, use a whistle from time to time. Consider carrying bear spray or "bear bangers". We recommend travelling in groups and staying in sight of one another at all times especially as you get further away from built up areas.
This brochure is a little slow to download but it is worth it.
